If they air it, it will change the world. Jiří Mádl's period film depicts the thrilling secret stories of Czechoslovak Radio journalists in the 1960s. Under the direction of Milan Weiner, the famous International Life Department of Czechoslovak Radio employs courageous journalists, celebrities of their time, whose posters adorn the walls of many homes. Among the journalist icons of the time, Jiří Dienstbier, Věra Št'ovíčková and Luboš Dobrovský, there is a young man named Tomáš. Actually, it was a bit of a mistake, the editorial position was the dream job for his younger brother Pavel. Until now, Tomáš has been mainly concerned with keeping them both safe, but has no idea that the local editors are in the crosshairs of the secret service. They become even more interested in the activities of the newsroom when a recording is discovered, the broadcast of which could change the fate of many. Time is running out, tensions are rising, and action is essential. Will Tomas become one of those who will go down in history, or will he protect his underaged sibling, the last remaining family member after the death of his parents?
In his most ambitious film yet, Jiří Mádl takes on real-life events in a gripping spy thriller about the importance of family, and the fight for freedom. The film was also featured in the Special Screenings section of the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival for 2024.
"WAVES showcase momentum and bravura craftsmanship. They dose the humour, tension and drama very precisely – and they build up a central character you can't help but sympathize with."
