The Last of the Unjust

The Last of the Unjust

DIRECTOR Claude Lanzmann
SCRIPT Claude Lanzmann

The unique testimony of Benjamin Murmelstien, the ‘puppet king’ installed by the Nazis at the end of the war as the highest-ranking Jewish official in the model ghetto of Terezín, is captured in a series of extensive interviews conducted in 1975. In 2012, the director sets out to retrace the memories of the protagonists of his film and finds himself amidst the silent backdrops of history’s terrifying theatre.

Claude Lanzmann is best known for his monumental historiographical documentary Shoah (1985), which comprises 9.5 hours of eyewitness accounts of the Holocaust.

Following the screening, there will be a discussion with Caroline Champetier, Laura Koeppel and a representative from the Terezín Memorial. The discussion will be moderated by Jan Machonin, with consecutive interpreting provided. The film is being screened as part of the Lanzmann Days in Prague.
