The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert

The heroes of this quirky road movie are two transvestites and one transsexual who set off from Sydney in a rickety bus named Priscilla, traveling through the desert to the Australian outback to perform their show in the town of Alice Springs. In it, the men dance in eccentric women's costumes to popular hits from the 1970s. Along the way, the trio meets a wide variety of people, but only some are willing to accept their differences. Among them are aging car mechanic Bob, who falls under the melancholic spell of the elegant transsexual Bernadette, and a group of indigenous workers who are enchanted by the strangers' performance. For the most part, however, Bernadette, Tick/Mitzi, and Adam/Felicia encounter misunderstanding and resistance. Although such reactions hurt them, they are unwilling and unable to stop being themselves. However, there is no harmony within the trio either: uptight, aging Bernadette, who is struggling to recover from the recent death of her boyfriend, is jealous of the provocative young Adam; Tick, on the other hand, struggles with the secret existence of his wife and son. The trio, marked by clashes with their surroundings and mutual squabbles, ultimately finds the hope and balance in life that they had been lacking.
