Red Rocks

Summer is beginning on the French Riviera – a summer five-year-old Géo will never forget. Together with a gang of children, he discovers a world of red rocks, the sea and dangerous cliff-jumping. But when a rival gang enters the scene, an innocent childhood adventure turns into a battle for territory. And between the rivals, something even stronger begins to emerge – the first sparks of friendship, attraction and love. It is a sun-drenched, childlike variation on Romeo and Juliet. Two rival gangs, a boy and a girl from opposite sides, and a world in which children's games gradually begin to echo the conflicts of adults. Yet Bruno Dumont transforms Shakespeare's tragic passion into a story about first feelings, freedom and the desire to belong – without sentimentality, but with plenty of humour, energy and tenderness. It is a singular cinematic take on childhood, at once an adventure, a story of first love and a small reflection of the adult world.
