When the Light Breaks

A young boy and a girl fall in love. Their relationship may become official when he breaks up with his current girlfriend. He promises her, but before that happens, the boy dies in a car accident. The friends are shocked by the tragedy and the grieving process is complicated by a hidden secret. The meeting of the former and future girlfriend and their parting with the memory of the boy leads to a strong emotional strain.

WHEN THE LIGHT BREAKS had its world premiere at one of the world's most prestigious film festivals, Cannes, in the Un Certain Regard section, where it was also the opening film. Icelandic director Rúnar Rúnarsson's previous films have had great success at film festivals around the world, with both VOLCANO and SPARROWS winning numerous awards. The Oscar-nominated director's new film is a sensitive coming-of-age film with an authentic and moving portrayal of the emotional world of teenagers.
