He is nineteen years old, wants to become a writer and, as yet, has no idea which direction his life will take. When his application for the coveted writing scholarship is unsuccessful, Anthony Bourdain arrives in the seaside town of Provincetown, Massachusetts. Instead of pursuing a literary career, he takes a summer job at a seafood restaurant and steps into the world of professional cooking for the first time. Behind its doors, he finds an environment full of noise, tension, sharp humour, physical labour and colourful characters. The kitchen has its own rules, its own rhythm and a close-knit community of people who provoke, support and keep each other afloat.
