"A young girl like you has lived on the shore of the lake since childhood; she loves the lake like a seagull, she is happy and free like a seagull. But by chance a man appears, sees her, and having nothing else to do, brings her to ruin, like the seagull here..." (Trigorin to Nina, The Seagull, Act II)
The first of Chekhov's so-called Big Four plays (in addition to The Seagull, it includes Uncle Vanya, The Three Sisters and The Cherry Orchard) premiered in 1896 at the Alexandrinsky Theatre in St Petersburg to disastrous reviews. The play was not a success until two years later, performed by the Moscow MCHAT Theatre and directed by K. S. Stanislavsky and V. I. Nemirovich-Danchenko.
The production, directed by Michal Vajdička, was one of the most popular and successful titles in the repertoire of the Dejvice stage for 12 years, and became a legend in its own right.
