The Samurai and the Prisoner

The historical drama THE SAMURAI AND THE PRISONER, directed by Kiyoshi Kurosawa, is based on the award-winning novel by Honobua Jonezawa and is set in Japan in 1578, during the turbulent Warring States period. At the heart of the story lies the tense relationship between two men: the castle lord, the samurai Murashige Araki, and his prisoner, the brilliant and dangerous strategist Kanbei Kuroda, an envoy from a rival clan whom Araki imprisons instead of executing. As the armies of Nobunaga Oda gather outside the castle walls, a series of unexplained deaths grips the castle, and fear, mistrust, and suspicion grow among the defenders. The gradual unraveling of the mystery becomes not only a detective investigation but also a clash of will, loyalty, and differing notions of honor, power, and freedom. Kurosawa conceived his first historical film as a tribute to classic Japanese samurai dramas. “I didn’t want to invent a new style. I wanted to make the film as classic as possible, because today’s audiences have almost forgotten the great Japanese historical films of the 1940s and 1950s,” says the director. Yet this is not a nostalgic reconstruction, but a story whose themes of power, freedom, and responsibility still resonate today. This is reflected in the austere visual style and the emphasis on the characters’ psychology. Violence, too, remains largely off-screen: “You can find real violence anywhere on the internet today. But that’s not a movie. In a movie, violence must be both real and restrained.”
