László Tóth (Adrien Brody) used to be an architect of European renown before his Jewish background made him a mere number waiting on a death row in a concentration camp. He managed to survive the war, but left wounded Europe immediately afterwards to forget. Like many others, he attempted a reboot in the shadow of the Statue of Liberty, only to find that his reputation as an exceptional architect remained at home in Budapest and that the proverbial American dream was not guaranteed for everyone. There is little consolation in discovering that his wife (Felicity Jones) has also managed to survive the horrors of a concentration camp, and that only a lack of money for travel prevents them from reuniting. The tables really start to turn when László meets wealthy benefactor Van Buren (Guy Pearce), who sees his potential and begins to generously support him. That's when László takes off. He weaves all of his art and talent, as well as past traumas and inner demons, into a structure that will grant him immortality. But only if he manages to complete it, if he doesn't destroy himself and everyone around him in the process.
