Nora (Renate Reinsve) reunites with her father after many years. Charismatic and once-famous director Gustav (Stellan Skarsgård) has written for her the lead role in a film that is supposed to be the culmination of his career. When Nora refuses to work with him, he casts eager Hollywood actress Rachel Kemp (Elle Fanning) in her place.
