Vienna, early 1980s. Perla, a Czechoslovak dissident, painter and single mother, does not have it easy. She tries to make a living as best she can. Above all, she wants to support her nine-year-old daughter Julie, who is a talented pianist. Her new relationship with the Viennese Austrian Josef gives her new hope and strength. Unexpectedly, however, Andrej, who has just been released from prison, calls her from his former home in Slovakia and tells her that he is seriously ill. He is her former boyfriend from her youth and Julie's father. This situation shakes Perla, and she finally decides on a risky plan. With fake papers, she returns to normalised Czechoslovakia to finally deal with her past. This will completely change her newly built existence, her newfound freedom and the safety of her daughter.
