Inspired by the life of French King Louis XV's mistress, this costume history film is the director's view of history through the keyhole. The French Revolution is presented here as the result of the personal relationships, jealousies and intrigues that dominated the royal court at the time. The film was hugely popular with audiences of the time from the outset, largely due to the outstanding performance given here by Pola Negri.
