In the mid-1980s, the elegant doctor Ingrid (Aňa Geislerová) works at a remote district hospital. Trapped in an dried out marriage and a stagnant career, she devotes most of her time to her patients. She delivers babies and terminates unwanted pregnancies. She also performs sterilizations on Romani women without them fully understanding the consequences. A new friendship with Agáta, a young and spirited nurse’s aide, prompts Ingrid to see things in a different light. Will she begin to question the rules she has so far followed without question? Ivan Ostrochovský’s powerful drama sheds light on an unresolved chapter of Czechoslovak history, when the state decided who could have children.
