Nocturnal Butterfly

Nocturnal Butterfly

DIRECTOR František Čáp
SCRIPT František Čáp, Václav Krška

Marta Dekasová works as a governess for a family living in a garrison town. The officers are attracted by her charm, in particular lieutenant Kala, but the girl is in love with the gloomy first lieutenant Varga. She cannot keep her feelings a secret even when she discovers he is married. NOCTURNAL BUTTERFLY, set in the last years of the Austrian monarchy, was made by a twenty-eight-year-old František Čáp with a script co-written by Václav Krška. Together, they elevated a simple melodramatic story into a cinematic work of exceptional quality. In addition to a stellar cast, the film captivates with its lavish sets and erotic sparkle, which also led the communist regime to censor the film for some time.
