Sonny Hayes (Brad Pitt), nicknamed the "wannabe world champion" of FORMULA 1 in the 1990s, was a promising racer whose career was ruined by a near-fatal crash. Thirty years later, while Sonny is making a living as a race car driver for hire, he is approached by his former teammate Ruben Cervantes (Javier Bardem), who is now the owner of a failing FORMULE 1 team. Ruben convinces Sonny to return to FORMULE 1, help his team to victory, and thus save it. Sonny's new charge is reckless rookie Joshua Pearce (Damson Idris), but he wants to go his own way. But as the engines roar, Sonny's past catches up with him and he discovers that his teammate is his fiercest competitor and that he can't navigate the road to redemption alone.
